Until two months ago, Dana’s Choice Restaurant and Takeaway Kikaaya, were the canteen service providers at Daily Monitor’s offices in Namuwongo and Airtel House on Jinja Road.

The news that three people who have served Daily Monitor staff food for more than two years, perished in an accident near Namboole stadium’s Northern Gate on the eve of Independence Day shocked and saddened the Nation Media Group-Uganda family.

The deceased Nasser Ssemakula, Shafiq Matende and Isma Ssemwanga, alias, Teeba - were travelling in a Toyota Hiace Super Custom when the van, carrying seven occupants, collided with a taxi. They were returning from serving a client in Namanve Industrial Park.
Teeba, 20, was the driver. He was buried in Namulonge, Wakiso District. He had worked at Hardware Solutions in Ntinda before he became a driver at Dana Restaurant in 2017. His peers will forever miss his irresistible jokes.

Mr John Bosco Ssegawa, alias, Mberenge, a chef at Dana’s, says: “The most remarkable thing about Teeba is that he would try to make everyone happy. He was a remarkable worker too, who loved his job.”

RIP. Nasser Ssemakula

Nasser Ssemakula, 20, was popular and much loved by the staff at Monitor Publications Ltd. He served the newsroom and other departments diligently and made many friends. His death broke many hearts.
At his burial, he was remembered as a boy who respected all elders in his village.

Ms Monica Namutebi, his supervisor, described Ssemakula as a diligent worker.
“He was a friend to most of us. Rest in paradise surrounded by angels and loads of laughs you gave us! Till we meet again,” Ms Namutebi said in a telephone interview.

Matende, who was buried in Iganga District, is remembered as a chef who made delicious snacks.
Ssegawa described him as a friend of many.
“It is like a bad dream. He had so many plans and when I found out about the accident, it killed me,” Mr Ssegawa said.
Ssegawa further described Matende as an enduring man with an effervescent smile.
All three were laid to rest on Independence Day.
