The management of Mountains of the Moon University wants government to take it over and turn it into a public university. The private institution located in Fort Portal, was established in 2005 by a team of eminent people from the Tooro region as a community university.

The founders include Professor Edward Rugumayo, Justice Seith Manyindo and Tom Butime among others.

Prof John Kasenene, the University Vice Chancellor, says they can no longer afford the high costs of running the institution.

He explains that the university is facing a huge challenge to pay staff salaries and improve infrastructure.

Prof Kasenene says that they have written to the government to take over the university.

According to Prof Kasesene, they hope that once government takes over the university, it will enhance the salaries of staffs, improve infrastructures and enable their students to access education loans.

According to Kasenene, the university has already applied to the National Council for Higher Education NCHE and negotiations are in advanced stages with government.

Should the negotiations succeed, Mountains of the Moon University will be the second private university to be taken over by government. Last year, government took over Kabale University, despite protests from some of its former Chancellor, retired Supreme Judge, Justice George Kanyeihamba.
