President Yoweri Museveni has said government will contribute Shs100 million to the Gulu University staff Savings and Credit Cooperative (SACCO).

Speaking at the university's 15th graduation ceremony in Northern Uganda, Museveni lauded staff for shunning strikes.

Museveni who is also the visitor at the University said the government would support the university's efforts to acquire more land for expansion and help it build a teaching hospital.

“Like I have said before, focus more on science courses. The government cannot fail to support the teaching of sciences and research. Some humanity courses stretch our education budget and yet produce graduates who will need further re-tooling to be absorbed in the job market,” he said.

He also urged universities to design and teach courses that solvekey societal issues.

“You should produce graduates who provide answers to key human needs, in the four broad sectors of agriculture, industry, services and ICT.

A total of 1,513 students graduated with Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates. 226 of the graduates were on government sponsorship.
