NRM leaders drum up support for sole presidential candidate

The National Resistance Movement party leaders in Kabale District have tasked women in the district to support President Museveni’s sole candidate proposal, saying it’s the only way women will continue to benefit from the visionary leadership of Museveni.
The NRM parliamentary caucus and the Central Executive Committees have since endorsed the proposal, paving way for Mr Museveni to contest in 2021 General Election.
The move by NRM to ring-fence the position of party presidential flag bearer for Mr Museveni followed a similar resolution by the national association of districts and lower local government councils under the Uganda Local Government’s Association who met in Kyankwanzi in mid February.
During the belated Women’s Day celebrations in Kabale at the weekend, the Minister of General duties in the Office of the Prime Minister, Ms Mary Karooro Okurut, advised women to continue supporting President Museveni for putting them on the national agenda in development.
Ms Okurut challenged women in the country to form associations and work hard to continue benefiting from the available government development programmes.
“I hereby donate Shs2m to the cause of empowering rural women in Kabale to attain skills on income generation. I promise to lobby for you more financial support from government. Please keep supporting President Museveni,” she said.
The State minister-in-charge of Planning in the Ministry of Finance, Mr David Bahati, who is also the Kabale District NRM party chairman, and Ndorwa West Member of Parliament, appealed to the lower NRM party structures to popularise the Kyankwanzi resolutions.
Funding women projects
He said government allocated Shs40b in the financial year 2018/2019 to supplement the funding of women projects in the country.
Mr Bahati also donated Shs3m to facilitate the training of women in Ndorwa East Constituency in hands-on skills and cottage industry operations for value addition and income generation activities.
The Kabale District woman Member of Parliament, Ms Catherine Ndamira, launched the training of women on skills development for value addition in locally produced goods for better prices.
The Ndorwa East Member of Parliament, Mr Wilfred Niwagaba, asked President Museveni to work towards peace with his Rwandan counterpart President Paul Kagame so that the border issue is resolved and people are able to move freely.
