He was arrested on Wednesday following a directive from the State House Anti-Corruption monitoring unit headed by Lt Col Edith Nakalema.
Mr Muwonge is said to have embezzled the funds while serving as CAO in Alebtong District.

Mr Michael Ongicha, the District Police Commander, confirmed the arrest. Mr Ongicha said police had issued Mr Muwonge with an arrest warrant and that they were waiting for him to return to his office.
He did not disclose how much money Mr Muwonge is alleged to have misappropriated.
“We only acted on the orders to arrest and hand him over to State House Anti-Corruption Unit and they have already taken him to Kampala to answer charges of alleged misappropriation of public funds,” he said.

Mr Stanley Eroku, the spokesperson of State House Anti-Corruption Unit, requested to be given more time before he could respond.
“I am yet to get details from the team on the ground. In the meantime, you can speak to Mr Don Wanyama, the senior presidential press secretary,” he said.
However, Mr Wanyama could not be reached for a comment by press time.
