One dead, 10 injured in seven-car crash on Masaka road

MPIGI. One person has been confirmed dead and more than 10 others injured in an accident that occurred Friday night at Mpigi-Bikondo zone in Mpigi Town along the Kampala-Masaka highway.

The accident that occurred at around midnight involved seven vehicles, including three commuter taxis, one of which was carrying passengers headed to an introduction ceremony in Bubuule village in Kamengo Sub County.

Other vehicles involved were; two Toyota canters, a truck and a UPDF pick-up.
Police identified the deceased as Owen Tendo, the driver of the Toyota canter that was carrying flowers, chairs and other items to the marriage ceremony.

Mr Joseph Tulya, acting police spokesman in Katonga region identified some of the injured as Ismah Zziwa from Maganjo in Wakiso District, Esther Namulema also from Maganjo, Mariam Nalwoga, Deogratius Kalyango, among others. They were all taken to Double Cure Medical Center in Mpigi Town and others to Mulago Referral National Hospital for medical attention.

According to Mr Tulya, one of the commuter taxis got stuck in the middle of the road after running out of fuel. A sand truck driver wanted to help the taxi driver and ended up making a double parking.

"...since it was night and very dark because there were no reflectors, other vehicles kept on knocking on those already parked. We also found waragi bottles in some vehicles. We suspect speeding and recklessness as the cause of this accident but we're still investigating the matter," he added.
The wreckage of the vehicles were towed to Mpigi Central Police Station for custody.
