One killed in Rukungiri grenade explosion

  • In February this year, a 15-year-old boy identified as Benjamin Ariho from Nyakatare Village in Kyanamira Sub County, Rukungiri District was admitted at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital after he was injured on the right hand in a suspected grenade explosion.

An 18-year-old boy from Kimanyoha cell, Nyakajeme Sub County in Rukungiri District was on Thursday afternoon killed by an explosive that detonated at their home as he collected rubbish.

The Kigezi regional Police Spokesman Mr Elly Maate identified the deceased as Julius Ahereza who died instantly after he gathered rubbish that allegedly contained a rusted grenade.

“The police bomb squad was notified and visited the scene to establish the type of the device that blasted and killed Ahereze,” Mr Maate said.

Local residents told police that they heard a big blast and when they came closer they found the young man already dead.

The body of the deceased was taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre for postmortem and the case was recorded at Rukungiri Police Station as CRB 1054/2019.

The incident occurred at Rwamugimba village, Kyanamira Sub County, in the neighbouring Kabale District and the relatives said that the victim went to fetch water from the nearby tap where he met his peers and started to play around with an unknown device which exploded when they tried to open it. The victim was later discharged after being treated.
