Over 8,000 set to graduate at Kyambogo University

A total of 8,892 students are set to graduate at Kyambogo University in Kampala during its 16th graduation ceremony staring tomorrow (Wednesday) up to Friday.
The three day ceremony that is expected to be attended by President Museveni will see the university also graduate their first batch of PHD students.
Addressing journalists at the university on Monday, the vice chancellor Prof Eli Katunguka said that out of the 8,892 students slated to graduate, 4,877 are male while 4,015 are female.
He said that this is the highest number of students the university is graduating since its inception.
Only two students from Philosophy and food technology are slated to graduate with PHD.
“This is the first time we shall be graduating doctorate students, an indication that the university is maturing in terms of academics. The numbers are still few because the courses are expensive,” Prof Katunguka said.
A doctorate student at Kyambogo has to pay about Shs5m per semester, according to Prof Katunguka and a few can afford it individually.
Prof Katunguka said that the university has only four full professors and 18 associate professors, thus the university has a lot to do to increase on the numbers.
Meanwhile, 20 students who are eligible to graduate will miss the graduation ceremony since their marks were not screened and verified by the required officers on time.
“We shall give those students their transcripts but they will not be able to attend the graduation ceremony. They will be able to attend it next year after their marks have undergone the right channels for verification,” Prof Katunguka added.
However, the venue where the graduation ceremony is slated to take place was by Monday flooded due the heavy rains being experienced across the country.
Prof Katunguka advised all parents and students to come prepared for the weather changes.
“It is true our grounds are flooded but we have no control over rain. We are trying to put channels and drainage to take water, but our students and parents should come prepared for the rain,” Prof Katunguka said.
At least 187 students are slated to graduate with first class honours.
Students from the Graduate School, Schools of Management and Entrepreneurship and Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation will graduate tomorrow.
