Police foil FDC women march to Parliament

Police on Wednesday dispersed members of the Women League of the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change who were attempting to march to Parliament to petition Speaker Rebecca Kadaga over the continued brutality by police against opposition politician.
About 30 women converged at FDC offices in Najjanakumbi, on Entebbe Road to prepare for the march.
Ms Anna Adeke, the national youth female MP said the protest was to express their dissatisfaction with security forces torment Ugandans and their resolve to side with the ruling National Resistance Movement party yet they are supposed to be impartial.
"Before you are women. No man will join this protest. This is a mothers' fight, to show the country how we are not happy with the way police and the army have been brutally arresting and beating our children and husbands," Ms Adeke said.
However, trouble started when they stepped outside the gate of the wall fenced offices.
Police officers who were on guard at the entrance pounced and arrested four women amidst a scuffle.
Some of the women who were locked inside the compound started throwing stones and other objects at police officer who retaliated by throwing stones at police officers.
Police responded by firing teargas.
On Monday, heavily armed police backed with armoured vehicles and water cannons sprayed Besigye’s cars almost throwing him out of the roof top of his car.
Dr Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and other Opposition leaders of FDC, had been scheduled to hold a conference at Mandela National Stadium Namboole on Monday.
The party had organised a two-day leadership party seminar to discuss their strategy for the 2021 General Election.
