Kampala- Police have again raided Kisenyi, a city suburb, and arrested six suspects alleged to be motorcycle thieves.
At least 20 motorcycles suspected to have been stolen were recovered by the police Flying Squad Unit.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said the raid is part of the operation to curb violent crimes that include armed robbery of motorcycles in Kampala Metropolitan area.

“The operation was intelligence-led. The shops we targeted have been dealing in used spare parts of motorcycles and it has been a base for selling stolen property,” Mr Onyango said yesterday.

He said the suspects will be charged with being in possession of suspected stolen property.

This is the second time police are raiding Kisenyi in 10 days. The first swoop had police arresting dealers found with equipment for utility companies such as Umeme and National Water and Sewage Corporation.
The suspects were charged.

In 2018, at least 481 cases of aggravated robbery of motorcycles were reported compared to 386 cases in 2017.
Aggravated robbery involves the use of deadly weapons such as firearms.

In the same period, a total of 4,612 cases of motorcycle theft were reported compared to 4,259 cases in 2017.

Mr Onyango said some of the stolen motorcycles are used by criminals to rob people at night in different parts of Kampala.
The operation dubbed Tokora III, which is part of the revised security plan announced by the deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj Gen Stephen Sabiiti Muzeyi, a month ago to curb violent crimes in Kampala Metropolitan Police area, is aimed at stopping criminals from benefitting from stolen property.

In October, police raided Katwe area where hundreds of motorcycle dealers were arrested and 250 motorcycles suspected to be stolen were confiscated.
