Police have confirmed the arrest of Dem Gaster Opondo, a brother to government spokesperson, Mr Ofwono Opondo.
Police deputy spokesperson Patrick Onyango said Opondo was arrested on charges of offensive communication contrary to the Computer Misuse Act.
“Mr Opondo was arrested last year in Tororo and transferred to Kampala because the complaint against him was opened at CID headquarters. He's being charged with offensive communication under the Computer Misuse Act. His file has been taken to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for perusal and legal advice,” Mr Onyango told NTV on Thursday.

One of the suspect's brother, Jonnah Okoth said he was arrested on December 29, 2018 and has not been charged in court formally.

"I don't think it's constitutional. It is more than 48 hours since he was arrested. He was brutally beaten and he has not received any medical attention. As his family, we're worried,” said Mr Okoth.
However, police say Mr Opondo is trying to get public sympathy by claiming that he was tortured.

“He’s trying to get sympathy from members of the public by alleging that when he was in our cells, he was tortured and made to do things that are unbearable. That's a baseless allegation. We do not torture suspects who are in our custody,” Mr Onyango added.
Gaster Opondo’s arrest comes days after he posted on social media denouncing the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and claiming that Uganda’s problem is President Museveni who has been in power since 1986.
In one of the videos posted on Facebook about three months ago, the 31-year-old said he supports People Power, a political pressure group led by the Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wine.

“I'm here to denounce NRM. I support People Power and have followed and supported Bobi Win for the last three years. I also want to stand as an MP and remove West Budama North MP, Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth because he was one of the MPs who voted for the removal of Presidential age limit. Most of the NRM supporters from Tororo do not see the poverty of our people,” he said in a video posted on September 24, 2018.
On December 19, 2019 Gaster said Uganda’s problem is President Museveni who has been in power since 1986.

“We seem to have taken our eyes off the ball and now we have left the enemy to score freely. This country is facing a disaster and if we keep on being distracted by self-seekers, we’re putting ourselves back to the starting point,” he said in a statement posted on his social media wall.
