Police officer accused of raping woman detained over infidelity

  • In November last year, a similar incident was reported at Namakwekwe police post in Mbale District.

A woman, who was taken to police by her spouse on suspicion of infidelity and later detained, has claimed a police officer raped her at night.
The woman, aged 19, reported the case at Kira Division Police after Kirinya Police Station in Kira Municipality in Wakiso District, where she was allegedly raped by the probation police constable, had refused to register her complaint.

Kampala Metropolitan police spokesman, Mr Patrick Onyango, confirmed the complaint and said the accused police officer has been arrested and medical examinations on both the suspect and victim were also done.
“The suspect is still in custody as his file is being processed to appear in court on charges of rape,” he said.
The woman claims the incident happened at night in Kirinya Police Station on February 9.

She had been taken in by the partner on allegations that she was involved in an extramarital affair.
She told police that the suspect came to her cell at night and ordered her to get out before taking her to the yard where impounded cars were kept.
She said the suspect threatened her with death if she resisted or made an alarm.

SP Onyango said the victim claimed that the suspect put on a condom and raped her severally before he ordered her to go back to the cells.
In the morning, the victim was released, but attempted to report the case at Kirinya for three days in vain until she went to Kira Police Division.
SP Onyango said Kirinya Police Station commander was able to track down the officer, who remained at the counter at night on the fateful day. Upon arrest, the officer was paraded alongside other suspects. The victim, although didn’t know the suspect’s name, was able to point him out.
The suspect denied the allegations.
Apparently, on the fateful day, the station didn’t have a female police guard.
It is a requirement for police cells to have female officers to cater for female suspects, but many police stations don’t have them due to shortage of personnel.

This is not the first time such an incident has happened.
In November last year, a similar incident was reported at Namakwekwe police post in Mbale District.
Another incident happened in Nnyimbwa Police Post in Luweero District where a policemen defiled a female suspect who had been detained for indiscipline in July 2018.
