Police put down dogs that killed housemaid

Kampala- Police were, on Wednesday night, forced to kill four dogs that mauled to death a housemaid in the home of Mr Daudi Wakambi, a resident of Kirimanyaga Zone in Zzana, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality.

The move was to quell an angry crowd that had started pelting Mr Wakambi’s house with stones after one of the dogs bit a resident.
Mr Yusuf Kayigwa, the Kirimanyaga Zone Local Council I chairman, said the dogs had been shot.

“One of the boys left the gate open when he went out to buy airtime. One of the dogs followed him and bit Issa Mpanga, who was walking outside the gate,” Mr Kayigwa said.

Mr Mpanga was rushed to a clinic in Zzana before an angry mob descended on Mr Wakambi’s house and started pelting it with stones.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire yesterday confirmed the incident, adding that police shot the dogs after the owner gave his consent.

“Police had to calm down the community who wanted to set the home of the dog owner on fire,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.
He said no one was arrested.

Mr Owoyesigyire said Mr Wakambi had recorded a statement in relation to last week’s incident where his dogs mauled and killed Agnes Mirembe, 43.

Mirembe had been hired from Buikwe District to work at Mr Wakambi’s home when she was allegedly attacked by dogs at dawn on Saturday after she stepped out of the house at 5am.

Although Mirembe made noise, none of the two young men who were in the house reportedly responded to her cry for help.
The local authorities called police from Katwe Police Station, who removed the body and registered a case.
The two young men, who were at home when the incident happened, were arrested by police but were later released on police bond over a case of neglect.

Mr Owoyesigyire said police had forwarded the file to the State Attorney for advice.
