Police rescue 18 people trapped on islands

Police Spokesperson, Mr Emilian Kayima

Police on Thursday rescued 18 people that had been trapped on three islands between the districts of Kayunga and Nakasongola.
According to the Police Spokesperson, Mr Emilian Kayima, they were trapped after a boat they were sailing in got swept away on River Ssezibwa due the rising water levels after heavy rainfall on Sunday.
“The police was notified and we mounted an operation that rescued 18, all alive,” Mr Kayima said in a statement released last evening.

He said after learning from several families that their relatives were trapped at three tinny islands, police used one of their helicopters in the rescue mission of all the victims who had been trapped with a possibility of drowning as the water levels kept rising and the winds blowing severely.
“We thank the officers for a successful operation carried out, the effort and speed employed,” Mr Kayima said.
He warned people who reside or work in water logged areas to take extra care as the rains fall.
“You must report possible incidents of drowning in case it happens to the area commander for quick intervention,” Mr Kayima said.
