Police rescue 13 Karimojong children from human trafficker

SOROTI- Police in Soroti have rescued 13 Karimojong children from a suspected human trafficker.
The children were being transported in a commuter taxi UBB 455D from Apeitolim trading centre in Napak District to Soroto town council.
The vehicle was intercepted at Arapai Sub-county.
The East Kyoga police regional spokesman, Mr Michael Odongo said the victims are aged between 5 and 15.
“The crime of child trafficking from Napak through Soroti is overwhelming. It is not the first or second time we apprehend children being trafficked,” he said.
Mr Odongo said that last week, four children who were rescued as they were being transported to Bukedea District, have been reunited with their families in Moroto District.
“The trafficked children are brought to work as maids, casual labourers at a cheaper cost in Teso region and neighbouring districts. We understand this group was being taken to Asuret Sub-county, in Soroti District,” Mr Odongo said.
He said the driver of the vehicle that was transporting the children has been detained as investigations progress.
The chairperson Napak Sistrict, Mr Joseph Lomonyang attributed the vice to factors like hunger, since most families perennially lack food.
