Policeman shoots intruder at Works ministry

Kampala. A suspected thug is nursing wounds after he was shot while allegedly trying to break into the ministry of Works stores in Kampala yesterday.
The suspect was shot in the leg by one of the policemen guarding the stores, who said he was alerted to the intrusion by unusual sounds.
Mr Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, said the policeman warned the suspect not to run away by firing in the air in vain, prompting the officer to shoot him.
“We are going to charge him as soon as he recovers. We thank our officer for applying professionalism on duty because if he was reckless he would have killed him,” Mr Onyango said.
In a related development, police sources have told Saturday Monitor that a unit of soldiers has arrested a police officer accused of hiring out guns to criminals who terrorise Kampala.
The arrested policeman is attached to a police post in Kyebando, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District. He was detained after he was cited by suspected criminals in Bwaise that he hires guns to.
Mr Onyango said he had not been briefed about the development, but promised to find out from division police commanders. Sources allege the policeman was named as the supplier of guns by an army deserter who has often been apprehended for engaging in robbery in Bwaise, Kawempe, Matugga and Kyebando areas.
