Patients in need of services that involve X-ray examination at Rakai Hospital are stranded following the breakdown of the machine. This was disclosed during the visit of the Minister of Health, Dr Christine Ondoa, who also commissioned a maternity ward at the hospital at the weekend.

The breakdown, which happened seven years ago, has forced patients to seek X-ray services from private hospitals which are expensive. Some travel 30km to Kalisizo Hospital where the fee for X-ray examination is Shs15,000.

Mr Godwin Kamukama, who has a stomach complication, said he is supposed to undergo an operation in two weeks, but he has been told to go for an X-ray before the operation.

However, he is still struggling to get the money. Dr Watima, the medical superintendent Rakai Hospital, said the machine broke down because of the big number of patients that used it. He added that more than 30 patients would use the machine every day. Dr Watima said they had reported the matter to the central government but nothing had been done.

In his speech, the District Health Officer, Dr George Mayanja, said the Ministry of Health has been informed of the break down but the Ministry keeps promising to replace it.

Ms Ondoa expressed regret that the machine had broken down for a long time, but said she had not seen any report about it.
The minister promised to accord the matter urgent attention when she returned to Kampala.
