Report corrupt judicial officers, Justice Katureebe tells public

Chief Justice Bart Katureebe has asked locals who have fallen victims to corrupt judicial officers to report them to higher authorities.
“Report court clerks, magistrates, judges and chief magistrates to higher authorities for action in case they demand bribes from you in the name of speedy justice,” Justice Katureebe said.
He said the few individuals within the legal department are tarnishing the name of judiciary by asking for bribes from the local people.
The Chief Justice said the individuals should be exposed and their contracts are terminated.
“Once such individuals are exposed, administrative action must be taken,” he said.
Justice Katureebe made the remarks on Wednesday in Kitgum District while responding to complaints made by the district LC5 chairperson, Mr Jackson Omona, who observed that the corruption tendencies had crippled access to justice by the populace.
The Chief Justice was meeting stakeholders and the people of Kitgum during an open court session he pre- sided over under the theme; “Bringing justice closer to the people.”
Mr Omona told Justice Katureebe that his office had received several reports about judicial officers who normally ask for bribes from either the accused or the victim to win court cases.
He also accused some police officers of asking for money to grant police bond.
Justice Katureebe in response tasked the district police commander, Mr Moses Bwire, to explain to the public why the police were asking for bribes to grant bond yet it is free.
Mr Bwire, however, said he was yet to receive the complaints from any member of the public.
“If you give them money, you are to blame, police bond is free. It should not be paid for,’’ he said.
