S. Sudanese militias shoot Ugandan truck driver dead

AMURU/GULU. A Ugandan truck driver has been shot dead by unknown armed men in the volatile South Sudan, the police have reported.
Samu Nyonjeza Yako, 28, a driver with Pan Afric Impex [U] Ltd, was reportedly shot dead last Wednesday in Rumbek Town, Lakes State.
He was reportedly driving a trailer to Uganda after delivering goods to Rumbek Town.
According to a truck driver who spoke to Daily Monitor on condition of anonymity, Yako was shot by armed men dressed in uniforms of the South Sudanese army and police, who had staged a roadblock and demanded money from him.
The deceased reportedly refused to give them money, arguing that he had already paid money at another checkpoint. Yako was shot four times in the neck.

Drivers protest
News of Yako’s death sparked anger among Ugandan drivers, who staged protests at the Uganda-South Sudan border point of Elegu Town Council in Amuru District, demanding the repatriation of the body to Uganda.
More than 200 truck drivers under their umbrella body The East African Drivers Association, have parked their vehicles at Elegu Town Council since Thursday last week and refused to cross into South Sudan, citing insecurity along the Nimule-Juba Highway.
However, on Saturday, the South Sudan government security personnel heeded their request and repatriated the body, which was handed to Ugandan Police officers at Elegu Town Council.
The Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Jimmy Patrick Okema, confirmed the shooting in an interview on Monday.
He said details of the deceased’s place of origin were still unclear, adding that information got from him contained only his name and nationality.
Daily Monitor, however, obtained reliable information that the body was transported to Kampala at the weekend for burial.
