Scores feared trapped in a collapsing building in Jinja

A worker searches for colleagues trapped in the rubble.

Police Wednesday rushed 11 people to Jinja Referral Hospital after rescuing them from a collapsing building that was under construction in Jinja Municipality.

The victims were part of the team of workers who were working on the site.

Unverified reports say one body has been retrieved from the rubble.

Scores of workers are feared trapped in the rubble of the two-storied building located on Madhivani Road.

It is believed that more than 45 workers were on the site.

Mr Anthony Mulimi, a porter at the site said he suspects that 11 of his colleagues are still trapped.

Ms Susan Mudeebo, a food vendor says that she had come to collect money from the workers when she saw the building collapsing.

"I served food to 35 people today and I had come to collect my money from them in the evening. Bbut before I could cross the road, the building collapsed and I fled to save my life," she says.

Mr Augustine Musisi, another employee said that the site engineer died last week and they were operating without a supervisor.

By the time of filing this report, voices of wailing workers could be heard under the rubble.

Cases of collapsing buildings are common in Uganda mainly due to shoddy work and poor or lack of supervision by responsible authorities.
