Six grilled over Ssebulime’s shooting

MUKONO. A combined team of detectives from Kampala headquarters and Naggalama Police Station Tuesday combed villages in Kayunga District to re-enact the circumstances leading to the reported brutal death of Ronald Ssebulime at police hands.
Witnesses interviewed by Daily Monitor said police pursued, arrested and handcuffed Ssebulime, 40, and one officer allegedly shot him dead at Nagojje Trading Centre following a compliant by Ms Aidah Nantaba, the ICT State minister, that he trailed her on a motorbike.
The victim’s co-accused, who was a passenger on the sports bike, escaped and his whereabouts remain unknown.
About 10 detectives in the company of Mr Samson Higenyi, the Naggalama Police Station CID officer, had by last evening questioned six people, among them, the director of studies at St Andrew’s Kaggwa SS in Kabimbiri where the deceased was on Sunday reportedly destined to visit his children in Senior One and Senior Three respectively.
He was intercepted and shot dead before reaching the school. The school administration withheld the tragic news from the children until yesterday morning when a relative showed up to pick up the children to attend the burial of their father in Mubende today.
Ms Diana Namayanja, a fruit vendor, who was speaking to minister Nantaba when Ssebulime arrived on a bike and inquired for directions to Kabimbiri Trading Centre, said two separate teams of detectives questioned her and her husband Dennis Kityo yesterday morning.
“I am now living in fear as security people are asking me many questions,” Ms Namayanja, 24, said.
It is not clear if the unnamed commander of police’s 999 patrol team, who responded to the minister’s distress call as well as the officer alleged to have fired the killer bullet, were among those interrogated.
Police officially said they had taken no one into custody over the killing. Investigators visited the scene of crime at Nagojje Trading Centre and spoke to residents in order to reconstruct the final moments of Ssebulime.
They also collected spent bullets for examination by ballistic experts to establish the type of gun that discharged it.
