Police in Jinja are investigating circumstances under which a Kampala University student was allegedly shot dead by a security guard.

Isaac Katagwa, 31, who was pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel Management, Tourism and Leisure at the university’s Jinja campus, was on Wednesday night allegedly shot dead at close range by a guard of to Star React Security Company.

The Kiira Region Police Spokesperson, Ms Diana Nandaula, on Thursday told Daily Monitor that they recovered the gun but investigations to establish the motive of the murder continue.

Ms Nandaula said the suspect is being detained at Jinja Central Police Statio while his victim’s body is at Jinja hospital mortuary.

Daily Monitor has also leant that the deceased had lost his paternal uncle, who was also his guardian after the passing on of his late father, barely a week earlier.

Relatives say
Mr Robert Nabeta, a paternal uncle of the deceased said Katagwa had gone to monitor the school at 9pm but was instead shot dead.

“He has been a student and at the same time, part-time worker at the university. He would organise chairs spread all over the campus tand put them in the store..,’’ he said.

Ms Scovia Mbakira, Katagwa’s mother said: “I am speechless; my son has been my breadwinner following the death of his father. I am now helpless.”
