Storm ravages 10 villages in Tororo District

A hailstorm on Friday ravaged over 10 villages in Magola Sub County in Tororo District leaving two people injured, property and crops destroyed.

It’s reported that the rains that lasted for three hours destroyed over 20 houses after trees fell on some of them. The rains also destroyed several acres of rice plantations, Banana plantations, and gardens of maize, beans, potatoes and cassava among other food crops.

Ms Cissy Awino, a resident of Posuna A village in Gule parish, said the iron sheets on her house were blown away by strong winds, her two-acre cassava plantation, beans and rice plantations were completely destroyed.

''I appeal to government and well-wishers to come to our rescue because at the moment we have nothing to eat or where to settle,'' she said.

Mr Apollo Ofwono, the LC1 chairperson of Posuna ‘A’ village said the two people who were rushed to the nearby health facilities to for treatment sustained injuries after the house they had sheltered in fell on them.

“We are only lucky that the disaster happened during day time otherwise if it had been in the night, many of us would have lost their lives,” he said

Mr Ojwang Obbo, the Magola LC3 chairperson consoled the affected families and assured them that he had communicated with the relevant authorities and hopes that they will be helped.

“Most of the houses and pit latrines collapsed while others were been filled up with water and this puts the lives of the resident at risks of contracting water-borne diseases. The residents are also exposed to high risks of famine since most of the crops were destroyed. I appeal to the government to come to the rescue of these people,” he said.
