Makerere University Management Tuesday held a futile crisis meeting with leaders of various staff associations to end the current stalemate at the institution.
The acting Vice Chancellor, Dr Eria Hisali told journalists on Tuesday that management met the leadership of three associations in the morning.

The leaders were drawn from Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA), Makerere Administrative Staff Association (MASA) and the National Union of Education Institution (NUEI).

Dr Hisali, however, says they didn't reach a conclusion because some leaders of staff associations were meeting Makerere University Council Chairperson, Lona Magara.

Dr Muhammad Kiggundu, the university’s manager of communications and international relations confirmed the talks.

The stalemate at Makerere University follows the suspension of Dr Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi, the chairperson of MUASA, Mr Bennet Magara, the chairperson of MASA and his general secretary, Mr Joseph Kalema for alleged indiscipline and inciting staff.

The university teaching and non-teaching staff announced a strike on Friday to protest the suspension of their leaders by Makerere Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe.

The striking staff are also calling for the removal of Mr Bruce Kabasa and Ruhinda North Member of Parliament, Mr Thomas Tayeebwa from the University Council.

The two officials controversially bounced back after the expiry of their term in December last year.

Mr Kabasa was the chairman of the University Council Appointments Board while Mr Tayebwa chaired the Finance, Planning and Investment Committee.
The university management has since Saturday insisted that the institution is operating normally.

Prof Nawangwe warned that staff members who join the strike would also be suspended.

At the university, several offices are open but lecture rooms are empty.
