Student drowns at Bujagali Falls, teacher arrested

Jinja District Police Commander, Mr Vincent Irama

JINJA - The Deputy Headmaster of Kiringo Progressive Academy in Bubiiro Village, Buikwe District, has been arrested after a Senior Four student at the school, drowned in Bujagali Falls, on river Nile in Jinja District.

Joshua Muwanguzi, 17, was one of 32 students of the school who went to a field tour at the 27th National Agricultural Show on Friday. The group went with Mr Alex Nsobya, the deputy headmaster.

"When we went to Bujagali Falls, he [Muwanguzi] sneaked from the group to swim and ended up drowning,” Mr Nsobya said.

A tour guide found Muwanguzi’s clothes ashore and alerted his colleagues who mounted a search and retrieved the body.

Mr Nsobya is detained at Jinja Central Police Station where he had gone to report the incident. Investigators are interested in ascertaining whether a visit to Bujagali Falls was on the study tour plan.

Jinja District Police Commander, Mr Vincent Irama, said on Saturday:  "We suspect that they went to Bujagali Falls without notifying its management,  because they would have briefed them on the deadly spots to avoid.”

The body was taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for an autopsy.

Mr Ronald Kasonko, an elder brother of Muwanguzi declined to blame the incident on anyone, saying it was an “an accident”.
