Teacher arrested over sodomising 5-year-old

What you need to know:

  • Cases of defilement of male juveniles are on the rise. Last year, 228 cases of defilement of male children were reported to police.

Police have arrested a teacher for allegedly sodomising a five-year-old boy, a pupil at King Fahad Islamic Primary School in Busega, Wakiso District.
Parents of the boy noticed that he was walking with difficulty and upon interrogating him, he revealed what had happened and identified the culpable teacher.
The Kampala Metropolitan police deputy spokesperson, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed they are investigating the case and the suspect had been detained at Katwe Police Division.

“We have preferred a charge of aggravated defilement against the 29-year-old teacher. The file has also been forwarded to the Resident State Attorney for perusal and advice. We expect the file to be returned on Friday [today],” Mr Owoyesigyire said yesterday.
Efforts to reach the school management were futile. The person whose mobile phone number is used on the school social media accounts claimed to have left the school. He promised to share telephone contacts of the new school manager in a shortwhile, but he became inaccessible soon after.

The parents of the victim said they took their child to hospital for anal surgery because the damage that had been inflicted on their son was life threatening.
They, however, accused police of delaying justice. But Mr Owoyesigyire said the suspect was arrested on November 14 and investigations, including carrying out medical tests and recording statements from several people, have been ongoing.
Through their lawyer Mirembe and Co Advocates, the parents petitioned the Ministry of Education to intervene.

“We request you to follow up on the traumatising and unfortunate incident by visiting our client’s kid at the hospital and also help to ensure justice is done,” the petition reads in part.
Ms Nakiwala Kiyingi, the State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, visited Katwe Police Division yesterday and was briefed by detectives on progress of the case.
On Tuesday, President Museveni warned teachers against molesting children and directed police officers not to release anyone of such cases.
His comments followed a media report about a Senior Two student of Wamala Mixed Secondary School in Mpambire, Mpigi District, who was allegedly sexually abused by the school director.
