Emmanuel Katongole: The founder of Quality chemicals

Emmanuel Katongole is the founder of Quality Chemicals Ltd, where he served as managing director and shareholder from 1997 to 2007 before founding Quality Chemical Industries Limited.
As chief executive officer of the company, the 51-year-old led a team of dedicated staff who transformed the company into a leading life sciences company in Africa, dealing in the importation and distribution of animal healthcare products, environmental science products and human pharmaceuticals.
Quality Chemical Industries Ltd, located at Luzira Industrial Park, Kampala, which is a joint venture company between Cipla Ltd, the number one Pharmaceutical Company in India and Quality Chemicals Ltd, Uganda. The company manufactures HIV/Aids drugs, commonly known as Anti-retroviral drugs and Anti-Malaria drugs commonly called Artemesin combination Therapies. This plant is the first such WHO Good Manufacturing Practice plant in sub-Saharan Africa.
Mr Katongole is also involved in the food and beverage production industry under Vero Food Industries Ltd located at Kampala’s Industrial and Business Park, Namanve, where he serves as founder, company chairperson and shareholder. He is also a shareholder and director of Tinosoft Ltd, a company associated to a number of leading International Information Technology companies.
Mr Katongole is a member of the Initiative for Global Development (IGD) - Frontier 100, a prestigious group that joins the most successful business leaders operating in frontier markets, with business leaders from the United States and Europe. The group’s Governing Council is co-chaired by Madeleine K. Albright and General Colin L. Powell, both former secretaries of State, US Department of State.
Mr Katongole was a finalist for the East Africa Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2011 Awards. He earned the Africa Business Leadership Award 2012 and he received the 2012 Africa Entrepreneurship Award. He was the East African Winner and representative at the 2013 Ernst and Young World Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in Monte Carlo.
He is a Rotarian and has steadily and diligently served his Rotary Club of Muyenga as director, president, country chairperson for Annual Giving, assistant governor, chairperson of the 2010/11 district conference and is now the district governor for Rotary district 9211, which comprises of Tanzania and Uganda.
Mr Katongole has been a Plenary Session speaker at two Rotary District Conferences and Assemblies. Other than speaking at Rotary conferences, he has been a keynote Speaker at London Business School and the University of Oxford in the UK, as well as Georgetown University, Stern Business School of New York University, Columbia University, MIT and Tufts University (USA). He has also been a Speaker at the Malaysia Africa Business Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as a guest of the Malaysia Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
He holds a Master of Arts Degree in Economic Policy and Planning and a Bachelor of Statistics degree, both at Makerere University. He has had a number of businesses-related post graduate training courses both in Uganda and in Europe.
In his free time, Mr Katongole enjoys reading business and economics journals and magazines. He also occasionally enjoys swimming and playing chess.
