Police chase ends in death of three Jinja robbery suspects

Traffic flow and businesses came to a standstill in Jinja town after police engaged in a shootout with suspected robbers.
The incident occurred at Masese I village in Jinja Municipality along Masese road.

Mr Yusuf Buseera, one of the eye witnesses said he saw a numberless car chasing a Premio registration number UAP 449S occupied by four suspects.
“The officers in civilian clothes shot the rear tyres and in the air before the suspects’ car stopped. They told them (suspects) to surrender but they instead started shooting at police officers,” he said.
According to Mr Buseera, two suspects died on the spot while another was critically injured. The fourth suspect escaped with a pistol.


Police, however, said the injured suspect died on the way to the hospital.

The deceased were identified as Patrick Ssemanda, Ramathan Lubwama and one only identified as Lukwago.
Kiira Regional Police Commander, Mr Paul Nkore said they received information that there was a group of thugs that had planned to rob a fish dealer around Masese and they swung into action before engaging the robbers in a shootout.

He said they recovered an AK47 with 30 rounds of ammunition and a vehicle in which the suspects were traveling.
He said: “Thugs who have been terrorizing Jinja should learn a lesson. They should surrender because we are now hunting for them.”
