Three family members arrested over death of girl waiting for PLE results

Police in Pallisa district have arrested three family members on allegations of killing a 16 year -old -girl.  The deceased was a
former pupil at Kaucho primary school. She was waiting for her Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results.

The body of Gertrude Akello a resident of Kaucho “A” village, Kaucho parish, Pallisa town was discovered by residents about 400 metres from
her home just a day after her parents reported the case of missing person to Pallisa central police station.
It is alleged that the suspects connived and strangled to death the deceased on New Year’s Day.

The suspects reportedly picked the deceased from their home to go for an outing in Pallisa town.

Police and residents said the suspects were seen drinking with the deceased on the fateful day before she disappeared.

The Pallisa District Police Commander (DPC), Mr Mathias Turyasingura who confirmed the arrest said the suspects are currently detained at
Pallisa central police station as investigations continue.

He identified the suspects as Florence Sandra Achom, 23 a student of school of Media in Mbale, Daniel Ochan a boda boda rider in Pallisa
town and Stella Igra,20 all residents of Kaucho “A” village, Pallisa town council.

“We arrested three suspects to help us in our investigations into the matter and we are done with our investigation,” said Mr Turyasingura, adding that they want to submit the file to Resident
State Attorney for advice.
According to the DPC, they preferred murder charge against the suspects. He said according to the post-mortem report the deceased was strangled.
Mr Turyasingura further dismissed allegations by a section of residents that the deceased was sacrificed.
“Some people are claiming that the deceased’s private parts were cut off. But that is not true, her private parts were intact,” he said.
A teacher who preferred anonymity at Kaucho primary school told Daily Monitor that Akello was among the candidates waiting for Primary
Leaving Examination (PLE) results. She sat for her PLE last year at Kaucho primary school.
The teacher said the deceased was a promising pupil.
