KAMPALA. Two people have been shot dead by marauding thugs in two armed robbery incidents in Nateete, a Kampala suburb.
The suspects were able to flee from the scene without being identified on Tuesday night.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Superintendent of Police, Patrick Onyango, confirmed the shootings and the death of two people that happened around 11.22pm and midnight.
“During the robbery, the thugs fired a bullet that hit Rafael Walugembe, 23, who was in his house and died on spot. Another person who was killed in the first incident isn’t yet identified. Both bodies have been taken for a post-mortem,” SP Onyango said on Wednesday.
According to police authorities, Nateete Police Station received a report of gunshots around Church Zone in Nateete. When they responded, they found one person laying dead in a Toyota Spacio registration number UAY 480U.
SP Onyango said as the officers were still patrolling around the same area, they heard gunshots nearby.
“They rushed to the new scene and saw a vehicle with an unidentified number plate fleeing the scene. Their efforts to pursue it were in vain,” he said.
However, the robbery victims, Denis Mwesigwa and his wife told detectives that the armed thugs blocked them near their home and started firing in the air.
“They said the thugs ordered them to put their hands up and hand over all they had in the vehicle. They took Mwesigwa’s wallet containing Shs400,000 and his wife’s bag that had Shs210,000. They also went away with their mobile phones and other valuables,” he said.
He said in the second armed robbery, a bullet hit Walugembe, who was in his house and died instantly.
“Seven cartridges have been recovered at the scenes and will be examined to establish whether it is the same firearm that was used in both incidents,” he said.
Armed robberies have continued in busy streets in the city despite the installation of CCTV cameras and deployment of Local Defence Unit personnel in nearly all Kampala neighbourhoods.
Last month, thugs armed with an SMG rifle and a pistol robbed a supermarket and mobile money shop at Mpererwe on Gayaza Road.
Tight Security guard Pilson Okot, who was guarding the supermarket was shot dead.
Police said later they were unable to capture the incident of the Police CCTV cameras in the area because they aren’t yet operational.
