ENTEBBE. Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers attached to the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) on Saturday arrested two people who were allegedly transporting two tons of immature fish worth millions of shillings from Lake Kyoga to Bwaise Market in Kampala.

Captain Isaac Ewaga, who led the operation said they got information and started tracking the truck which was used to transport the immature fish until it was intercepted in Bwaise, a Kampala suburb.

“We followed these people until we got them in Bwaise while they were offloading the immature fish to hand it over to the owners. The driver of the truck managed to escape, but we arrested two suspects who are currently detained at Bugonga police post in Entebbe Municipality,” Capt Ewaga said.

He said the suspects will be taken to court as they hunt for the driver. He advised fishermen to stop participating in the illegal fishing because ever since they were deployed on Lake Victoria, fish volumes have increased in the lake.

Capt Ewaga said that they are training more officers to be deployed on Lake Kyoga to fight illegal fishing.
