Two dead, scores injured after truck carrying Kanungu traders falls into ditch

Two people have died following a motor accident in the wee hours of Tuesday morning at Hakagyezi along Hamurwa - Kerere - Kanungu Road.

Esther Kumara and Andrew Ngabirano both traders from Kanungu District died on spot while four others were seriously injured after a section of the flooded road at Hakagyezi stream caved in before the truck they were travelling in fell into a ditch.

"This accident has claimed the lives of two people and four others were seriously injured. Several others escaped with minor injuries," Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, Elly Maate said.

Police said the accident happened at about 3am as traders from Kanungu District were travelling for a weekly Karukarara Market in Hamurwa Town Council in Rubanda District.

"As police we are looking for the driver only identified as Alex who took off after the accident. The vehicle is at Rubanda Police Station as investigations continue,” he said.

Mr Atukwase Kafanta, a district counselor said that vehicles ferrying traders from Kanungu to Kabale markets have always set off in the wee hours when sometimes it's still dark.

"We have always been worried about something happening to our traders the time they set off. You wonder during rainy seasons, the road is misty which affects the vision of car drivers and other road users,” he said.
