Two die in Lwera truck accident

Two people have been confirmed dead following a motor accident at Lwera near Lukaya Town Council in Kalungu District along Kampala-Masaka highway.
The accident occurred on Friday afternoon after a Kampala-bound Fuso truck carrying sacks of Irish potatoes from Kisoro District knocked a stationary lorry loaded with with bunches of bananas.

Residents used axes and other sharp objects to retrieve the bodies from the wreckage of vehicles amidst wails from the crowd at the scene.

Area traffic police identified the deceased as Abbas Basajjamivule, a banana trader at Kitemu in Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District and Abraham Birungi, a turn man of the lorry with sacks of Irish potatoes.
Mr Joseph Ssemuwemba, one of the eyewitnesses, told this reporter that the driver of the lorry with Irish potatoes was speeding before accident happened.

"He was speeding as he tried to overtake three other vehicles. He was stunned by an oncoming car and lost control of the truck before it hit a lorry that was parked on the roadside. After causing the accident, he ran away," Mr Ssemuwemba said.
