Two jailed over Oulanyah rip-off

Kampala. Two men, who were arrested for allegedly conning deputy Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah of more than Shs1m, have been remanded.
It is alleged that Mr David Mutatiina impersonated the commandant of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), Brig Abel Kandiho, and conspired with a security guard; Aloysius Byaruhanga to defraud Mr Oulanyah.
The duo yesterday appeared before Nakawa Magistrate’s Court and denied charges of obtaining money by false pretence, fraud and impersonation. They were remanded until January 10 for mention of their case.
The trial magistrate, Mr Noah Nobert Sajjabbi, dismissed an application in which the suspects had asked for orders to compel the military and police to release their property which was confiscated.
The property, according to the suspects include diaries, mobile telephones and unspecified amounts of money.
Mr Sajjabbi reasoned that releasing the said property would amount to interference with the investigations since the same could be used as exhibits during prosecution.
“Ordering for your items to be released may be ordering police to release exhibits which are to be used during the hearing of the case. Let us wait for the hearing and if they are not tendered as exhibits, then you can apply for them,” Mr Sajjabbi held.
