UHRC officials charged with theft of Shs100m

The Secretary to Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), Mr Mabiiho Patrick Nyakana has been charged with corruption over the disappearance of more than Shs100m.

Mr Nyakana appeared at the Anticorruption Court in Kololo, Kampala on Thursday. He is jointly accused with five other UHRC senior officials; Principal Human Rights Officers who were charged with similar offences last month. They are director in charge of regional services Mr Wilfred Muganga Asiimwe, Mr Tadeo Wamala (accountant), Ms Rebecca Nassuna (regional human rights officer for Jinja), Mr Willy Agirembabazi (Central region) and Ms Rebecca Agnes Tino in charge of Hoima. They reappeared with Nyakana in court on Thursday and their bail was extended.

The officials are under investigation by police following complaints filed with the Lt Col. Edith Nakalema-led State House Anticorruption Unit about embezzlement of Shs100m between November and December last year.
