Gulu University has opened a centre to help rehabilitate people affected by physical and psychological trauma in Acholi, a region that is recovering from the effects of the LRA war. Launched by Prof John C. Cheeseborough III, the director of the Laboratory for Engineering & Applied physics of Weill Cornel Medical colleges in New York, the centre is said to be the first of its kind in the country.

“This centre will be using the latest technology, specifically designed for this region. We shall train people locally here to run it,” Prof Cheeseborough III said.

He added: “This is a process geared towards the rehabilitation of northern Uganda that suffered a war that affected people emotionally, physically and psychologically.”

Gulu University Vice Chancellor Jack Nyeko Pen Mogi said the centre will not only treat trauma but also help those who lost limbs and other body parts to the war.

“The centre will also benefit the neighbouring countries such as South Sudan, Kenya, and DRC where there have been civil wars,” Prof Pen Mogi said.

Last year, President Museveni pledged $350 million (about Shs880 million) to support the planning process of the project.
