Kampala. The leadership of Boda Boda 2010 Association was elected on May 28, 2010.
But some boda boda cyclists, who were under the disbanded Kampala Union Boda Boda Cyclists Association (Kuboca), say the elections were a sham since their leaders were never allowed to participate. Nevertheless, since 2010, the Boda Boda 2010 leadership has been extending its mandate without conducting elections.

Patron: Abdullah Kitatta
He has been the patron since the association was established in 2010. Mr Kitatta expanded his authority to become the chairman of the National Union of Drivers, Cyclists and Allied Workers (NUDCAW), which has been behind several strikes in the transport industry. Although he claims to have been a boda boda rider before, several cyclists from rival groups say there is no evidence to back his claim. The cyclists say they elected him patron because he linked them to several political and security leaders.

Ibrahim Ssekajja
He heads the section that issues identity cards to association members. Ssekajja is also in charge of receiving payments on behalf of the association. He manages their main office in Rubaga Division, which was burnt by angry cyclists on Monday.

Atanansi Kafeero
He is the de facto chairman of the association and the second in command to Kitatta. He also handles the public relations department.

Joseph Nsindazi
He is in charge of Boda Boda 2010 offices in Makindye Division. Together with his gang, they reportedly move with metallic chains that they chain on motorcycles whose owners are not affiliated to the association. The motorcycles are then taken to their offices from where the victims pay registration fees before they are released.

Joel Kibirige
He is one of the most feared members of the association. He is the association’s mobiliser and heads most operations that target cyclists heading to the city centre. He was involved in running battles with police after the former commander of Old Kampala Police Station, Mr Muhammad Kirumira, raided their offices and recovered impounded motorcycles.

Deus Kananura
He has been passive in the association’s operations. He is among the few leaders who were not arrested by CMI.

Rashid Kawaawa
He is described as an elder in the group. He was among the first people in the boda boda business in Kampala in the 1990s. His major task is dealing with cyclists who have no permanent stages. He is also known for fighting criminality within the boda boda industry, a feat that earned him respect from the police chief, Gen Kale Kayihura. He was not arrested by CMI.
