Woman, baby perish in five-car crash on Kampala-Masaka road

MPIGI.
Two people have died and several others injured in a road accident involving five vehicles at Nakirebe village in Mpigi District along the Kampala-Masaka highway.
Mr Phillip Mukasa, the police Spokesperson in Katonga region said on Tuesday that the accident happened at about 8.40am due to the morning fog and recklessness by a Fuso lorry driver.

"Our preliminary report shows that the driver of the lorry, registration number UBA 410Z, which was loaded with merchandize and matooke, was trying to overtake two other vehicles from Masaka side before he collided with other two from the opposite direction," he added.
The other vehicles involved are three commuter taxis number UAY 100R, UAZ 485P, UAV 397P, a Super Custom belonging to Two Travel Safaris; registration number UBB 713K.

Police identified the deceased as Olivia Kiyimba of Busega- Kigwanya zone in Wakiso District and unidentified baby.
Some of the injured included; Ms Safina Mubiru from Busega, Ms Rose Namiiro of Nakirebe village, a one only identified as Mama Derick from Kibibi in Butambala District, Fatuma Namukasa from Nabbingo, Lubega (a turn boy of the Fuso lorry), Mastula Nakazzi of Kawempe and her five-year-old daughter, Swabula Nabuuma, among others.

The bodies were taken to Mulago hospital mortuary for autopsy and the injured to Double Cure Clinic in Mpigi town council, St. Mary's Bahaise Medical Center at Nakirebe and Mpigi health center IV.
The wreckage of vehicles have towed to Mpigi Central Police Station as investigations continue.
