Soroti. Health services at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital Monday morning came to a standstill after a 20-year-old woman, who had undergone caesarean procedure, unexpectedly stabbed the mother-in-law, who was attending to her, dead.

The suspect, whose name we are withholding in line with our editorial policy until she is produced in court, drove a knife into Anna Akiror following a spat over how to escape from hospital.
A witness said the suspect delivered a baby boy on Sunday but the mother-in-law foiled her plot to flee from the health facility. It was unclear why she wanted to escape.

Ms Esther Akol, a witness, said the incident happened at 10pm when the suspect lured the deceased into the bathroom from where she knifed her in the chest. Akiror reportedly collapsed and died on the spot, sparking panic among other patients, their caregivers as well as health workers.
“We thought everything had been settled, but we were surprised at night only to find out she had killed her mother-in-law,” Ms Akol said.

Mr Michael Odongo, the East Kyoga region police spokesperson, said the deceased hailed from Kakure Sub-county in Kaberamaido District. “We had to flee the premises with the suspect because the mob wanted to kill her,” Mr Odongo said.
Dr Ekunait Oumo, a senior doctor at the hospital, said this was the first such killing at the facility. Akiror died instantly before doctors could attend to her, he said.
