Two children killed in Sironko Landslides

SIRONKO: Fresh landslides have killed two children in Sironko District following torrential seasonal rains in Bugisu sub region on Friday.

The deceased have been identified only as Winnie, nine years and Tom, seven years. Both were residents of Kyesha Village, Zesui Sub County in Sironko District.

"It’s true we had a disaster this evening and two children died. But I’m still waiting for more information from my officers on ground," said Mr Isaac Lulaba, the RDC Sironko

Sironko District Woman MP, Ms Florence Nambozo Mayoga also confirmed the disaster, saying it happened at about 5pm on Friday.

“It’s true another landslide has killed two children in my district and displaced hundreds of people,” she said.

Ms Nambozo said the deceased were coming from Nabweya hill, and were taking food to their grandmother in the same area when the landslide happened.

“The repeated landslides in the district are worrying because we can’t tell when or where they will strike next,” Ms Nambozo said.

Eyewitness said that it was not easy to save the children because they were trapped in the rubble. Zesui Sub County is one of the sub county prone to disasters.

The residents appealed to the ministry of Disaster and Preparedness to come to the aid of the affected families.

Sironko district has suffered effects of the extreme weather conditions ranging from landslides to floods which have left hundreds of families displaced while others dead. Crops and houses have been destroyed and a number of people have sought refuge from their relatives, schools, churches and public places.
