Light up expressway to prevent crime

This year, Uganda has seen some of the big infrastructural developments that have been in the works take shape. Since the Nile Jinja Bridge was commissioned, several people have stopped by the attraction to take photos and show how proud they are of the bridge.
The other infrastructural development that has received rave reviews is the section of the Entebbe Expressway that is complete. Drivers have praised the motorway for saving them hours in travel time, especially during the rush hour.
Indeed, travelling, say from Busega to the airport is not as time-consuming as before.
These developments, therefore, cannot be overlooked, as the country looks forward to more of such.
However, these wonderful developments have come with a few issues all responsible authorities should nip in the bud before things get out of hand.
The expressway has no street lights at the moment.
This, therefore, makes a drive on the road at night a dark, almost an eerie one.
The darkness itself would not be a problem except for people who naturally have a fear of the dark because of what may be lurking in it.
However, that darkness has become a cover for criminals to waylay motorists. This newspaper has reported cases of criminals robbing people on the road.
Earlier this year, the police arrested two soldiers over robbery on the road. However, robbery is still happening.
Almost every week, someone posts on social media about almost being robbed, advising other motorists not to use the road when it is dark.
While motorists are taking precautions by avoiding the expressway when it is dark, this does not bode well for the perception of what is supposed to be a good thing.
The expressway should be lit up and security measures put in place so that citizens can enjoy the development without fearing for their property and lives. Government should not wait for fatalities to act.
Otherwise what is supposed to be a structure the country is proud of will soon gain a reputation that only brings shame to it.
