Don’t stigmatise ex-LRA fighters

Following a story in Daily Monitor of May 29,titled, “Apaa land claimants are criminals – LC5 boss”, I am writing to express our deepest disappointment and displeasure at the utterances allegedly pronounced by the LC5 chairman of Adjumani District.

Majority of ex-LRA fighters were forcefully recruited into the force and whatever they did during their stay in the bush was to save their own lives.

Government granted amnesty to the ex-combatants who are resettled in different parts of the region, not only Apaa as he alleges. By accusing us that we ‘committed many atrocities’ and are hiding from justice, the LC5 boss is not only bringing back terrible memories of the past, but also stigmatising us. Therefore, we demand that he publicly withdraw his statement and apologise.

We suffered so much trauma, some of which we are still nursing to date. So, we don’t need to be reminded. We would also like to appeal to the general public, including politicians, to stop dragging us into of land wrangles. We are very peaceful citizens who were only victimized by circumstances that surrounded us at the time.
