Make Quiin Abenakyo tourism ambassador

Above all, Abenakyo was crowned Miss World Africa 2019, the first Ugandan beauty queen to accomplish this.

What you need to know:

  • Her remarkable performance at the pageant started about a week back after securing a place in the top 30 at the Miss World finals. This was after beating Miss Argentina in a head-to-head challenge where Abenakyo stated in her presentation that she would use Uganda’s beauty with a purpose to fight teenage pregnancies.
  • With pet subjects such as fighting teenage pregnancies, Ms Abenakyo’s humility and patriotism were exhibited, especially through a WhatsApp message she sent back home to a Miss Uganda official. “I kept on saying ‘For God and My Country’ Uganda. All I wanted was for God to use me to make Uganda shine.”

I would like to congratulate Ms Quiin Abenakyo, the reigning Miss Uganda 2018-2019, for being selected among the top five contestants during the recently concluded Miss World beauty pageant in Sanya, China, on December 8.

Above all, she was crowned Miss World Africa 2019, the first Ugandan beauty queen to accomplish this. It is quite a feat, which means for the next year, the 22-year-old will not only represent Uganda, but also the entire African continent on the world stage! Ms Abenakyo’s win also means the government of Uganda does not need to hire any foreign celebrity as a tourism ambassador to promote our tourism industry as we now have our very own tourism celebrity, with instant face recognition on the international stage, to do that for us.

I would also like to congratulate the Miss Uganda Foundation for their effort in preparing all the contestants. Special thanks to Ms Sylvia Namutebi, Miss Uganda 2011, who had prior experience at the Miss World beauty pageant. Preparation is always key, especially in such international competitions as it helps professionalize the participants and boost their confidence in front of cameras.

It was almost as if Ms Abenakyo was destined for the role, as her name ‘Quiin’ is a variation of the title ‘Queen.’ Ms Abenakyo has generated positive publicity for the country. Uganda needs more role models like her. Undoubtedly, Ms Abenakyo’s victory has raised the bar and will motivate future contestants to bring that crown home!
