South Africa should share experience with Uganda on national dialogue

What you need to know:

  • I have a feeling that you abiding the policy of “non-interference in internal issues.

Your Excellency, I salute you in the name of peace. Incidentally, I am also convinced beyond any doubt that you are doing the Ugandan population a disservice by not sharing the stark similarities of Uganda with South Africa in its quest for freedom and right to be heard. Perhaps the Ugandan regime does not notice that most of the repressive acts and laws are a replica of apartheid callousness.

First, you will recall that about eight weeks ago, the world celebrated both the lives of Madiba Mandela and Bantu Steven Biko and circumstances of the latter’s death. Horrible scenarios glaringly similar to the “shackling” and other forms of torture in South Africa apartheid prisons continue unfolding here in Uganda. I suppose you have noticed that the equivalent of the rallying cry of Amandha; Ngawethu is being vanquished violently; haven’t you?
You, therefore, owe something to Ugandans who supported the suffering people of South Africa in their quest for justice, freedom and peace for all.

Why then don’t you throw your weight in urging the Government of Uganda to dialogue with contending parties for the sake of peace and stability, being mindful of the fact that the National Party with all its economic and military might had to talk to ANC, CP and the others? Recall the National Party had to talk Madiba out of prison and Chris Hani out of the trenches, why?

Lastly, I have a feeling that you abiding the policy of “non-interference in internal issues. Really? Please stop it. How come it was not applicable then even when Racist South Africa was a sovereign state? I suppose Somalia where Ugandan troops have a presence is not any less sovereign. Is oppression by Whites then to be abhorred, but by blacks glorified? We expect you to advise Ugandans on the matter of national dialogue?
Inkosi Sikelel’ Africa!
