KAMPALA. Teenager Jacob Kiplimo headlined Uganda’s perfect weekend in long-distance running at the weekend by comfortably winning the Great Manchester Run on Sunday.

Kiplimo won the 10km race in a race in a time of 27 minutes and 31 seconds for the fourth fastest time over the distance in 2019. “The race was okay,” Kiplimo told Daily Monitor late on Sunday. “Manchester is a very nice place,” he said.

Winning in Manchester meant Kiplimo became the second Ugandan in history to win this event after Moses Kipsiro who won it in 2013. British star Mo Farah won it last year.

At 18, Kiplimo already boasts of individual silver in the senior class and a gold at the junior ranks at the World Cross-country as well 10000m junior bronze and silver medals.

Having dominated the road since November including seven wins in cross-country, Kiplimo will now switch to track next month ahead of the Doha World Championships.

By finishing second behind compatriot Joshua Cheptegei at the World Cross-country in Aarhus, Denmark on March 30, Kiplimo automatically qualified for the 10000m in Doha.

He however intends to compete over the long-distance double in Doha. “Not only the 10000m,” Kiplimo said ahead of his next event - the 5000m race at the Rome Diamond League Meet on June 6.

Elsewhere, Abdallah Mande was left thrilled by his progress after he finished second behind Morris Gachaga at the Cape Town 12K Run in South Africa.
