Egypt remains the team to beat in Zone V basketball after winning their opening two games at the ongoing Fiba AfroBasket Zone V tournament in Lugogo.
The second, played yesterday, came at the expense of the Gazelles, the national ladies’ team who succumbed to a 64-55 loss.
It was hardly straight forward though as the Gazelles dominated the opening two quarters to take a 40-24 going into the third period.
Jamilah Nansikombi scored 16 of her team high 18 points in that period before fading badly like the rest of her teammates.
Award Menatalla led Egypt with 19 points while Reem Mousa made 10 assists for the Egyptians who also got a nine-point win over Kenya in their opening game on Wednesday.
The loss for the Gazelles meanwhile came on the back of a 62-53 win over Rwanda in which she claimed a team high 14 points.

False start
Their male counterparts the Silverbacks also got off to a wrong start in the AfroCan qualifier going down 70-61 to Kenya who played Egypt in the late game yesterday.
The five men’s teams will face each other in a round-robin format to determine the winner with games resuming tomorrow after today’s rest day.
The women’s AfroBasket qualifier meanwhile involves four teams with the Gazelles set to tussle it out with Egypt, Rwanda and Kenya. The game will until Sunday.
