Challengers eye supremacy at new Divisional T20s

KAMPALA-Going by their pedigree, Challengers are masters of the T20 version of club cricket in Uganda.

They boast of a record three National Twenty20 League crowns won in 2014, 2016 and 2017.

But they were deterred from making a three-peat by KICC who beat them by 11 runs in the Unimoni-sponsored Cup semi-final on December 9.

Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has a new T20 Divisional tournament where clubs compete in their tiers with the intention to prepare players across the divides for forthcoming ICC Africa Twenty20 Qualifier on home soil in May.

It is here that Challengers are eyeing supremacy again in this shorter code. Their first opponents are KICC whom they meet at University Oval in Kyambogo for a double header today.

“We did not win anything last year,” said Challengers’ top-order batsman Arthur Kyobe. “So definitely, we want to win this,” said the left-hander.
Kyobe in particular is eyeing a return to the national team for the May job following a sabbatical since the 2017 ICC World Cricket League Division Three.

“I just want to enjoy my game,” Kyobe preferred not to offer much. But he is in the company of new faces Perry Wazombe, Zephaniah Arinaitwe and Rogers Olipa picked from the defunct Strikers side that now become Challengers’ U15 side.

Arinaitwe and Frank Akankwasa returned from the ICC High Performance camp in Potchestroom, South Africa on Wednesday.

Similarly, KICC’s new players like Akankwasa from Strikers while Deus Muhumuza from Tornado Bee and Simon Ssesaazi from Ceylon Lions are also in India.

But KICC skipper Hanumant Katkar will have Ssesaazi’s elder brother Lawrence Ssempijja, veteran wicket-keeper Lawrence Ssematimba and returning Siraj Nsubuga available.
