What you need to know:

  • Abeja’s vice-captain Charity Baira Opolot lauded the standout visitors, 28 from Nyahururu Golf Club in Kenya.
  • The atmosphere was on a low due Abeja’s absence and loss even though emcees David Ssekitoleko and Gloria Mbaguta did an excellent job.

Kampala. The black tie dress code at the 19th hole prize giving ceremony coincidentally fitted the somber mood at the Uganda Golf Club (UGC) Lady Captain’s Prize event on Saturday.

The 29th edition of the showpiece was meant to be a ‘Thank You’ for UGC lady captain Anne Abeja for her year’s dedication but she couldn’t celebrate it.
Lawyer Abeja lost her father on the eve of the tournament on Friday, the dress code matching the sad mood.

But as Abeja was her away to bid farewell to her father, it is her honorary secretary Wendy Angu’Deyo who emerged as the best player with 43 stableford points at the par-72 course to win the South African Airways-sponsored tournament.
“First of all this morning...,” Angu’Deyo began her emotional victory speech after receiving a dummy air ticket from South African airways country manager Yogi Birigwa and a hug from chief guest Dokolo Woman MP Cecilia Ogwal.

“After the sadness last night (Friday), I told the lady captain (Abeja) that I was going to play for her and I did,” the handicap 14 player remarked. “And then at home, I was told to go for it,” she said, much to the laughter of the audience. “The team that I played with encouraged me especially Hon. Capt. Evelyne Asiimwe. This is our win all to the ladies’ section.”

Angu’Deyo won a trip for two to either of Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban as well as another trip to Kabalega Lodges courtesy of Dr. Peter Apell.
“Now I am going to do a ruffle to see who I will go with since everyone (friends and relatives) wants to go with me,” she joked.
On the other hand, Angu’Deyo’s game has risen in just three years of play. Well known for her ties with Onduparaka Football Club and West Nile Golf Club in Arua, Angu’Deyo’s secret is a simple one.

“I work hard. My putting was right and drives were good meaning my work paid off,” added the super excited lady after beating a field of 240 players.
