What you need to know:

  • Mutaawe shone with two rounds of 73 and 71 to win last year but will need to be more lethal in today and tomorrow’s round on a course everyone will look to ‘kill’.
  • The professionals are playing for Shs15m over 54 holes.

Kampala. The recent rains all over Uganda have played perfect foil to the par-71 Entebbe Golf Club (EGC) course. Whereas many thought they would make the course unplayable in the build-up to the 19th JBG Open, club captain Edwin Tumusiime says the course is in ‘pristine condition’.
“The rains haven’t changed the course a lot,” said Tumusiime. “The wet condition has slowed them just a bit but it remains perfect roll.”

Such will be the conditions of play, defending champions Herman Mutaawe (professionals), Becca Mwanja (gross winner), Ibrah Bagalana (overall men’s winner) and Jovia Tugume (ladies winner) will have no room for error at the Shs120m Gauff-sponsored event.

And with the playing numbers expected to swell to 240 golfers in tomorrow’s amateur round, Mwanja, Bagalana and Tugume’s mettle will be fully tested by a full house of competitors anxious to step onto the podium.
Officiating at the launch yesterday, the managing director of Gauff, Winyi Emmanuel Mugamba alongside Mr. Helmut P Gauff the founder of the company under the theme “Water – Connecting people and sustaining life” hailed the cordial relationship that the company has kitted with Entebbe Golf club over the 19 years the tournament has been held.
