For a decade, close to 200 golfers gather annually at the Palm Valley Golf and Country Club for the Pepsi Independence Golf Tournament.

Unlike previous editions the golfers who tee-off for the amateur /corporate category this morning will this time converge to increase breast cancer awareness following revelations made at the launch of this year’s event at Sheraton Hotel.

“Our 2019 theme for this golf tournament is Tee off against breast Cancer whose chief purpose is to procure a cancer machine. That will aid in early detection of all types of cancer because there still exists a gap in early detection support, hence fueling our decision to take on methods to deliver awareness through diagnosing the disease at an early stage,” observed Crown Beverages Limited (CBL) Corporate Communications Manager Tracy Kakuru Otatina.

Consequently, green fees for the event have been placed at shs100,000 for each participant which together with partners’ funds, will help procure the much needed cancer machine according Kakuru.

October being the breast Cancer awareness month and the month when Uganda commemorates her 57th independence, CBL sought an opportunity for participants and consumers to celebrate and embrace talent for community support and development geared towards fighting the cancer scourge in Uganda through golf,” she added.

The four-day competition that started on Sunday is being played under the stable-ford format according to David Sekitoleko, Business Development Consultant at Sheraton Hotel Kampala.
